Starting from 1st April 2025, changes have been made to the ATECO five and six-digit codes. This announcement was made by INPS through their circular released on 31st March 2025, number 71. INPS announced the integration of the ATECO 2025 code in its information systems. It serves as a new classification of economic activities, which will form the basis of the criteria, although not the only one, for categorizing employers. Alongside this, an update has been made to the “Company Registration and Variation Procedure”.
From 1st April 2025, it is possible to assign the ATECO 2025 code to new business IDs requested by employers starting up operations with employees. Consequently, for new registrations with a business start date later than 31st March 2025, employers must alternatively indicate either the ATECO 2025 code issued by the Chamber of Commerce Industry Craft and Agriculture (CCIAA) or the code resulting from the reassignment of the previous ATECO 2007 code carried out by CCIAA.
For all active business IDs enrolled prior to 1st April 2025, INPS progressively assigns the new ATECO 2025 code, corresponding to the pursued economic activity. This assignment is also based on the reassignment activity carried out by CCIAA potentially reconciling any discrepancies with what was stated in the contributory position.
Lastly, INPS clarified that the new version of the “Guide to the classification of employers for welfare and assistance purposes under article 49 of Law 88/1989”, updated with the ATECO 2025 economic activity classification, will be made available after the publication of the concerning circular.
