Maritime Disease: Electronic Communication

The Italian National Social Security Institute (INPS) has announced that the medical certification for the sickness of maritime employees will take place based on the results of the UniMare Mandatory Communications data. This decision is a departure from previous regulations outlined in message no. 610/2020, which required maritime employees to display their logbook/record sheet or equivalent documentation in paper format.

From the date of the announcement, verification of the consistency between labour relation events and the medical certification of sickness will be carried out for all maritime workers entitled to sickness protections. This will be based on the results of the data from UniMare Mandatory Communications. However, it remains the case that further supplements may be required if deemed necessary, through the acquisition of the logbook/record sheet or equivalent documentation in paper format.

For maritime employees who maintain employment relationships/retributive availability (so-called C.R.L), the obligation to show the logbook/record sheet or equivalent paper documentation remains in place. This requirement is also in force for non-maritime workers carrying out their duties aboard the ship, who are equally obligated to present equivalent documents.

The standardization process for processing flows has been implemented in harmony with the rest of the population insured against sickness events. Consequently, the data transmitted by the employer through UniMens flows, already used by INPS for all purposes, will now be used.
