Metalmeccanici’s CCNL: Workers Request Renewal with Strike on 28th March

Unions and workers in Italy have taken to the streets, demanding the reopening of negotiations and the implementation of commitments made during earlier talks. This comes in the wake of a wave of strikes in the metalworking sector that culminated in a labor demonstration on March 28. Trade unions Fim, Fiom, and Uilm have issued a press release declaring the positive outcome of their discontent and sending a clear message to the employer associations Federmeccanica and Unionmeccanica: reopen negotiations and renew the sector’s contracts.

This follows a 24-hour period during which the workers struck after negotiations broke down on November 12 last year, and talks regarding the small and medium-sized enterprises were interrupted on March 17. The unions have since continued their strike, demanding the blocking of overtime and flexibility at all workplaces.

The unions’ hope is that Federmeccanica and Unionmeccanica return to the table for discussion, beginning with the union’s platform, which has been approved by over 98% of female and male workers. Their goals are to materialize the increase in wages, stabilize working relationships, and strengthen health and safety.

The clear message from the unions and workers is a call for discourse and action regarding the issues affecting them, including wage increases, job stability, and safe working environments. The labor movement continues to pressure for changes, leveraging the percentage of their sector’s workers that support their cause as their bargaining chip in the discussions. Their demands suggest a deeply felt need for better working conditions and respect for the rights and wellbeing of employees within the sector.
